INTERNSHIPS FOR ACADEMIC CREDIT

All students majoring in integrated marketing communication are required to complete at least one supervised internship for 1-3 hours of academic credit.  Students are encouraged to seek their own place of employment for internships, but academic advisers can be very helpful in suggesting appropriate internship sites.  Students should confer with their academic adviser or internship faculty adviser before contacting internship sites.

Students must apply for academic internships.  Applications can be downloaded from this site or picked up in Johnson 219 during normal office hours.  The deadlines for internship applications are as follows:

Internship

Application Deadline

Fall Semester

May 1

Spring Semester

December 1

Summer Semester

April 1

Because internships are expected to provide meaningful professional experience related to one’s major, not all proposed internships will be approved.  In addition to gaining approval for internship sites, students must meet the following academic requirements:

  • Junior standing
  • Completion of IMCO 105, MCOM 241, MCOM 370, MCOM 341, MKTG 380, MGMT 321 AND MKTG 481 with a C or better in each course.

Once a student is approved for his or her internship, a contract must be completed between the student, the employer, and Winthrop University.  In order for academic credit to be given for the internship, a record of the student’s progress must be kept.  Specific guidelines will be set up in the internship contract, but minimum requirements include:

  • Filing a weekly report to your internship adviser showing the work you have completed
  • Completing a final report that summarizes, reviews and analyzes the internship experience before a grade is assigned
  • Employers must submit a confidential evaluation form concerning the student’s work and ability to the internship faculty adviser
