International Admissions

Timing of Application

Winthrop University has rolling admissions for international students (no deadlines), however to begin in the semester you prefer we recommend the following:

Preferred Semester

 Apply by this Date

Fall Semester - Classes start in last August

  July 1

Spring Semester- Classes start in early July

  November 15

Requirements for Admissions

The following requirements for admissions also are listed on page 2 of the application which can be downloaded above.  

  1. Application fee. This $60 USD fee includes the cost of sending materials to you by courier mail if you are admitted.
     

  2. Application.   A fully completed and signed application must be submitted.
     

  3. Transcripts/academic records.   Applicants must have successfully completed secondary education and official transcripts or academic records from prior high school and university education must be provided.   These documents must be either originals or certified copies, and if in a language other than English, please also provide an English translation together with the original or certified copy.
     

  4. Verification of English Proficiency.   All students must demonstrate English proficiency through one of the following.  Please have you scores sent directly to Winthrop (use code 5910 when registering for TOEFL and SAT) or submit your results with your application.

    TOEFL

    520/paper; 190/computer; 68/internet

    IELTS

    composite score of 6.0; no subscore lower than 5

    ELS Language Center

    successful completion of level 112; Academic Report mailed directly from the ELS Center

    SAT

    a verbal score of 450 or higher

    Students who have completed high school in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Bermuda, or English-speaking Caribbean countries are not required to meet this requirement.   Transfer students who have completed two semesters of college/university English composition in the USA with a minimum grade of “C” in both courses can also waive the requirement.  English composition cannot be taken as a distant learning course or simultaneously in the same semester.
     

  5. Evidence of Financial Support.  As outlined on page 3 of the application, you must submit a bank statement or bank letter indicating that you or your sponsor has sufficient funds to meet all expenses related to your education at Winthrop. Your bank statement or bank letter must specify that you have at least the total amount required for one academic year.  This can be in US dollars or in any other convertible currency.   The bank statement must be the original document - copies cannot be accepted - and cannot be dated more than six months prior to the student's enrollment at Winthrop.  The total cost for one academic year can be found by clicking here.
     

  6. Passport copy.   If you already have your passport please send a copy of the page that includes your name and date of birth with your application.

If you are currently in your final year of secondary school (high school) you can apply prior to completing your final semester and receiving your final grade report.   Submit your records for years 10 and 11 and any semester or other records that are available for your final year with your application.  We can make our admission decision based on this information.   We will need you to submit your final year grade report once it is available.

Please do not send your application until your have all of the required documents described above.   We can not admit students based on faxed or scanned submissions.

When all your documents are prepared, mail them Winthrop University, International Center, 701 Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill, South Carolina, USA 29733.    

Transfer Students

From a US College or University
International transfer students enrolled at an American college/university must submit a Transfer Verification Form in addition to the other required credentials. A copy of the student's I-20 must be attached to the Transfer Verification Form

Transfer applicants who have attempted 13 semester (19.5 quarter) or more hours (excluding courses designated as remedial or developmental) of course work from a regionally accredited institution must present a cumulative grade point ratio of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must also earn a 2.0 GPR for the last term of attendance.

Transfer applicants who have attempted 12 semester (18 quarter) or fewer hours (excluding courses designated as remedial or development) will be evaluated on their performance in college, high school GPA, and SAT or ACT scores. Emphasis will be placed on grades earned in college courses.

Transfer applicants must have official transcripts of all college coursework (part- or full-time, attempted or completed) from every institution attended (whether or not credit was earned or desired) sent directly from the registrar of each institution to the International Center of Winthrop University.

From a Foreign Institution
If you are a transfer student from a foreign institution, complete course descriptions or syllabi of all courses you have taken must be provided to allow evaluation for transfer of credit.  Your academic advisor will award transfer credit based on your course descriptions and syllabi. Courses not offered at Winthrop University or grades received below a "C" will not be awarded course credit.

Transfer applicants must have official transcripts of all college coursework (part- or full-time, attempted or completed) from every institution attended (whether or not credit was earned or desired) sent directly from the registrar of each institution to the International Center of Winthrop University.

 

International Baccalaureate (IB) Students

If you are a high school student that has taken the International Baccalaureate (IB) exam, and have received a score of 4 or higher, click the following link to view course exemptions Winthrop University Exemptions.
