PHI ALPHA THETA
THE NATIONAL HISTORY HONORS SOCIETY
The largest, and one of the oldest honors societies in the United States, Phi Alpha Theta was organized at the University of Arkansas on March 17, 1921. It now consists of over 275,000 members organized into 839 chapters. Winthrop University's own chapter, ALPHA TAU, was chartered on April 26, 1947. Both a scholarly and professional society, Phi Alpha Theta's mission is to advance the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching and publication; it encourages students and professors to meet together in social and professional occasions; it promotes student participation and paper presentations at state, regional, and national conventions, as well as holding its own special programs at the annual conferences of the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians and the Southern Historical Association amongst others. The 2008 Phi Alpha Biennial Conference will be at the HYATT REGENCY TAMAYA RESORT AND SPA, ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO, January 3-5, 2008. Our chapter will be sending a delegation to the conference.
PUBLICATIONS:
Phi Alpha Theta publishes a distinguished scholarly quarterly, The Historian, one of the most widely circulated historical journals published in the United States. Members of all levels are encouraged to submit finished research and convention papers for publication, and a years free subscription of the journal comes with initiation into Alpha Tau http://www.phialphatheta.org/publications.htm.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS:
Alpha Tau and the Winthrop Department of History sponsors two undergraduate writing awards open to both members and non-members, The Ross Webb Award and The James Logan Award. The chapter sponsors an annual service award, The Alpha Tau Service Award, which is presented to an active member of the chapter. All three awards, which include a monetary prize, are presented at either the fall or spring initiation ceremony.
The national organization also sponsors twenty
five competitive scholarships and awards to undergraduates, graduate and
professional members. Among the national awards is The Thomas S. Morgan
Memorial Scholarship, named for a past member of the Winthrop University
history
department and president of Phi Alpha Theta. Further

MEMBERSHIP
Initiation, Spring 2008
Alpha Tau initiates new members in a fall and
spring initiation: prospective members are tapped to join the society by
invitation from chapter
members. New members have to be initiated by a chartered
chapter and individual membership applications sent to the national office are
not accepted. Undergraduates, graduate students and academic faculty are all
eligible for membership
