SCHOLARSHIPS

THE JAMES LOGAN AWARD
Awarded annually by a departmental committee for the best
undergraduate paper
(minimum of 2,000 words) completed that academic year on any non-United
States topic in any
upper level Winthrop history class. The Logan Award
consists of a monetary prize, an engraved
plaque and is awarded every spring
semester.

THE ROSS A WEBB AWARD
Awarded annually by a departmental committee for the best undergraduate paper
(minimum of 2,000 words) completed that academic year on any topic in United
States history
in any upper level Winthrop history class. The Webb Award
consists of a monetary prize,
an engraved plaque and is awarded every spring
semester.

THE GLENN BROACH MEMORIAL AWARD
Awarded annually to the most outstanding joint History/Political Science
double major.
The decision is based upon student hours and GPA and is made by
Dr. Cornish in consultation
with the departmental Awards Committee.
THE ALPHA TAU SERVICE AWARD
Awarded annually at the spring initiation, the award is presented to the most
outstanding member of the chapter.
The Alpha Tau Service Award consists of a
monetary prize and an engraved plaque.
THE SOUTH CAROLINA SOCIETY OF COLONIAL DAMES GRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded bi-annually to a Winthrop graduate student in
history. Although preference is given to graduate students
in early United States history, all history graduate students are eligible for the scholarship.
The decision for the scholarship is made by a committee of the Colonial Dames of
South Carolina upon the recommendation of Dr. Cornish and Dr. Sarah Stallings, the
graduate
program director.
THE ANNETTE SPIERS RESCH GILLESPIE SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1995 by Mr. Doyle Gillespie in memory of his wife, Annette
Spiers Resch Gillespie, Winthrop Class of 1975, this scholarship
was created to
provide financial assistance for one or more undergraduate students at Winthrop
University. Preference will be given in
awarding this College of Arts and
Sciences Scholarship to a rising senior majoring in history. Application is in
spring through the
College of Arts and Sciences Student Services Office, Kinard

THE HAYES SCOT HEAVNER SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to a rising sophomore, junior or senior who intends to seek teacher
licensure and to pursue a career in teaching. Preference is
given to history
majors and especially those who may also coach. The scholarship was established
in memory of a Winthrop student
Hayes Scott Heavner Application is in spring
through the College of Arts and Sciences Student Services Office, Kinard 106.

THE HOLCOMBE SCHOLARSHIP
Established by Mrs. betty Holcome, this scholarship is awarded to a student
majoring in the liberal arts with preference given to a
student from Pickens County, South Carolina.
THE GEORGE INABINET ADAMS LEFVENDAHL SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1990 by South Carolina Society of Colonial Dames, this
scholarship was established in memory of
Mrs. George Inabinet Adams Lefvendahl
and is open to students from the College of Arts and Sciences.
THE ROBERT M. WARD SCHOLARSHIP
Established to remember Robert M. Ward, a lifelong supporter of Winthrop
University, this scholarship is given to students
enrolled in the College of
Arts and Sciences.
THE KATE V. WOFFORD SCHOLARSHIP
Known as the "scholar's scholarship", this scholarship was established by G.
Watts and Mattie H. Cunningham in memory
of their niece. It is open to all students of the College of Arts and Sciences.
