Winthrop Scholarship Guidelines:
Recipients of
renewable, academic scholarships from Winthrop University should
be aware of
the following guidelines.
1. Scholarship
renewal is based on the cumulative grade point average of
courses taken at
Winthrop University. Grade point averages are reviewed at the
conclusion of the spring
semester
to determine eligibility for the following academic year.
2. Exceptions to the
required grade point average are made in only two instances. A
student
whose cumulative grade point average falls below the requirement
may attend summer school
at Winthrop to improve the cumulative
grade point average. During this probationary period,
the
student is not eligible to receive scholarship funds or related
benefits. The second
exception is for
a student who has a documented medical condition which has led
to a medical withdrawal from
classes or has significantly affected his/her class
performance. The impact
of any documented
medical condition on class performance will be determined by the
Chair of
the Scholarship
Committee in consultation with the student’s professors for the
semester(s) in question.
3. Withdrawal from
Winthrop constitutes a cancellation of the scholarship
contract. A
student
who leaves school for any reason other than a documented
medical withdrawal or
other qualified emergency must have the
prior consent of the Chair of the Scholarship
Committee if the
scholarship is to be reinstated upon the student’s return.
4. Scholarship
recipients are required to be enrolled full time each semester
(12 or more
hours).
5. Students whose
scholarship includes an amount for room charges may not use
these funds
for
off-campus housing. All room scholarships are limited to the
amount of the double
occupancy rate
of a traditional residence hall room.
6. Students whose
scholarship includes a meal plan will receive funds to cover any
of the full
meal plans offered by the University. These include
the Unlimited, Gold, Silver, Eagle, and Freedom plans. Students
residing in the Courtyard may elect Café Cash of the equivalent
value as the meals plans listed. No other meal plans may be
substituted for these plans. This scholarship is designated for
meals only and cannot be used for other costs should a student
wish to decline a meal plan.
7. Students desiring
to use one of their eight semesters of eligibility to attend
summer school
at Winthrop University may do so by contacting the
Office of Financial Aid prior to the
beginning of
the summer term. Regardless of the number of hours taken,
summer school enrollment equates to
one semester of scholarship eligibility. Summer school
scholarship
amounts may be up to one-half
the academic year amount or a student’s total summer tuition
charge, whichever is less.
8. Scholarships may
be used for participation in study abroad or National Student
Exchange
up to
the amount of Winthrop tuition. Room, board, and out of state
fee grant portions of scholarships may not be used in these programs. Should tuition at the study
abroad institution
or NSE school be
less than tuition at Winthrop, a scholarship which covers full
Winthrop tuition will be reduced to the amount of tuition at the
host school.
9. Appeals for any
extenuating circumstance should be submitted in writing to the
Chair of
the Scholarship Committee, 119 Tillman Hall, Rock Hill,
SC 29733. Appeals will be reviewed
by the Scholarship
Committee. Decisions of this committee are final.
