  • Student Environmental Council

    The SEC is comprised of students that are interested in actively participating in improving their local environment. Activities include environmental awareness seminars, and volunteer activities geared toward cleaning up both Rock Hill and the Winthrop community.     Take a pre-symposium kayak trip down the Catawba River, Sunday, April 1, 12 noon, meet at Dinkins parking lot.  Equipment provided.  Free.  Sponsored by the Winthrop Environmental Program, the Winthrop Outdoor Adventure Club and Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism. 

  • Climate Crisis: A Call to Action lecture, Karen McKernan, Climate Project presenter, (Thursday, April 12, 5-6.15 pm, 215 Sims, Free Cultural Event)

2005-2006:

  • Student Environmental Council RiverSweep (Saturday, October 1, 2005)
  • Hurricane Katrina: Anatomy of a Disaster; Is South Carolina Vulnerable?  

A forum on why New Orleans was devastated by Katrina and whether Charleston is next.  Featured speakers were Dr. Scott Harris (Coastal Carolina University) and Ms. Sandy Bernard (SC Sea Grant Consortium).

  • Fourth Annual Environmental Symposium (week following March 25, 2006)
    • Environmental Festival and community art installation of "Beautiful Things on the Grounds", Saturday, March 25
    • Rewilding North America: A Vision for Conservation in the 21st Century: 

A keynote address in Plowden Auditorium at 7:30 pm on Monday, March 27 by Dave Foreman, Senior Fellow with the Rewilding Institute

  • Second Annual Environmental Symposium
    • March 29:  Working Toward Sustainability: This event formally recognizes the signing of the Talloires Declaration by our university president. In addition, Dr. Tom Kelly from the University of New Hampshire offered insights into the development of a campus plan to realize the general goals of the Talloires Declaration and into how sustainablity initiatives on campus can be successfully monitored. 
    • March 30: Leave-Your-Car-At-Home event: A symbolic walk-bike event that starts and finishes at Dinkins and encourages participants and observer to use cars less often and educates them on the negative environmental impacts of automobile usage.  (cancelled due to heavy rains)
    • March 31:  Ozone Problems in Our Area: An Air Quality Forum:  A panel of experts examined the local ozone problem from multiple perspectives.  Dr. Pat Owens discussed the formation of ozone.  Dr. Michele Sinn, highlighted the human health impacts of tropospheric ozone. Ms. Laura Boothe provided insight into regulatory issues facing the Charlotte-Metrolina region and Mr. Eric Greenway discussed how air quality informs the local planning process.
