Welcome
To Graduate Studies in the Department of
English |
Graduate study in the Winthrop University English
Department presents an opportunity for you to work with a
dedicated and gifted faculty in small classes and to receive
an unusual level of personal attention. Each member of the
graduate faculty holds a Ph.D. and is an active scholar in his
or her field; the Department also includes widely published
novelists and poets. In recent
years, we have hosted a number of important conferences, and
several scholarly journals have been founded or published
here. Currently we are proud to be the home of both The
Mark Twain Annual and the quarterly Working Papers on
Irish Studies.
At the same time, Winthrop is
primarily a teaching institution, and the Department of
|

Winthrop English
graduate students work together in class during Dr. Gloria
Jones and Dr. William Naufftus's "The Neo-Victorian Novel"
class. |
English is committed
to
teaching excellence. We note that five of our members
have won prestigious teaching awards and that teaching is at
the center of every faculty member's
work. The Master of Arts program
consists of either 30 semester hours with a thesis or 36
semester hours without one. While our program emphasizes the
study of literature, students are able to take courses in
creative writing, composition and rhetoric, and linguistics;
collateral courses are also available in supporting areas or
documents. In recent years, about
half of the students who receive an M.A. have also been
admitted to doctoral programs, usually with
assistantships. We welcome
inquiries about our program. Please direct any requests for
information to me as graduate director. You can e-mail me at
