Level of Academic
Challenge
Challenging intellectual and creative work is central to student
learning and collegiate quality. Colleges and universities promote
high levels of student achievement by emphasizing the importance of
academic effort and setting high expectations for student
performance.
Compared to their peers across the board on the 2008 NSSE, Winthrop
first-year and senior students indicated a significant amount more
involvement in:
• Working harder than one thought one could in meeting an
instructor’s standards or expectations
• Synthesizing and organizing ideas, information, or experiences
into new, more complex interpretations and relationships
• Making judgments about the value of information, arguments, or
methods, such as examining how others gathered and interpreted data
and assessing the soundness of their conclusions
• Applying theories or concepts to practical problems or in new
situations
