Level of Academic Challenge

Challenging intellectual and creative work is central to student learning and collegiate quality. Colleges and universities promote high levels of student achievement by emphasizing the importance of academic effort and setting high expectations for student performance.

Compared to their peers across the board on the 2008 NSSE, Winthrop first-year and senior students indicated a significant amount more involvement in:

• Working harder than one thought one could in meeting an instructor’s standards or expectations

• Synthesizing and organizing ideas, information, or experiences into new, more complex interpretations and relationships

• Making judgments about the value of information, arguments, or methods, such as examining how others gathered and interpreted data and assessing the soundness of their conclusions

• Applying theories or concepts to practical problems or in new situations

Why is Winthrop University so strong in the area of level of academic challenge?

• In 2004, Winthrop began implementing a new core curriculum designed to challenge students and develop the capacities needed for academic and career success

• As a teaching university, Winthrop faculty have become increasingly focused on and dedicated to their students’ significant and deep learning

• Winthrop University maintains 100% accreditation of all applicable programs which ensures a high level of academic challenge
