Spotlight on SURE

The 2007 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) was an opportunity for students in the biology and chemistry departments to dedicate a summer to research in their disciplines, supervised and assisted by Winthrop faculty.  Click here for more information, including a list of presentations and the abstract book.

NCUR 2007

In addition to supporting travel to discipline-specific professional meetings, the institution has been funding student travel to national and regional undergraduate research oriented meetings (NCUR and BigSURS). This year Winthrop helped fund 13 students from the College of Arts and Sciences who presented at the NCUR, which was held at the Dominican University of California, San Rafael, CA on April 12-14th 2007. In addition, Dr. Moore, VPAA, funded 16 of the 17 students presenting at the first BigSURS held at Coastal Carolina University, Myrtle Beach, SC on March 23 and 24, 2007.

The BigSURS was started by the schools in the Big South Athletic Conference as part of an effort to promote academic initiatives. The purpose of the BigSURS was documented on the Coastal Carolina meeting website: Undergraduate Research (NCUR) is the major academic conference for all fields of study and is entering its 21st year in 2007 to be held at Dominican University of California . http://www.dominican.edu/ncur21.html Based on this superlative, long-standing model, BigSURS will be scheduled for the years when NCUR takes place west of the Mississippi River. In consideration of limited travel budgets, this symposium will provide another opportunity for students on the East Coast to participate in an academic conference and to present their research.
