Important Facts for all
College of Arts
and Sciences Students
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
General Education Course Requirements
are located on pages 37-38 of the
Winthrop
University Catalog and on the Degree Checklist. Please
review and know your course options before registering for classes.
(Some programs specify General Education courses.)
Major Requirements Check
the Degree Checklist or
Winthrop
University Catalog for specific requirements. Please note that you
cannot apply more than 36 hours in one discipline toward
the major. If you are enrolled in a B.A. degree program you can
count six additional hours in that discipline toward general
education, minor or general elective requirements.
Minor Requirements Only B.A.
degree programs require a minor. Specific requirements for minors are
located on pages 156-160 in the
Winthrop
University Catalog.
General Electives Some
majors permit the student to take a large number of electives (e.g. over
30 hours) while other programs have no electives. Please check the
Degree Checklist and the
Winthrop
University Catalog before enrolling for an elective.
ACAD 101 All first-time
freshmen must enroll in ACAD 101 during their first semester at
Winthrop.
Cultural Events Students
must attend 3 approved
cultural
events for every 20 hours of course work completed at Winthrop. (No
student will be required to attend more than 18 events for their
undergraduate degree requirements.)
Foreign
Language Requirement (College of Arts and Sciences only)
All candidates for the B. A. and B. S. degrees
(B.S.W. degree is exempt) in the College of Arts and Sciences must
demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language by receiving transfer
credit for a 102-level language course or passing a 102-level language
course or a course with 102 as a prerequisite at Winthrop. (English majors must complete a foreign language course at the 201
level.) AP credit and CLEP examination credit which translates into Winthrop University
foreign language credit at the 102 level or higher will also satisfy
this
requirement.
International students with a non-English language as their primary
language can petition the College of Arts and Sciences Curriculum
Committee for possible exemption from the foreign language requirement.
NOTE:
Only 3 semester hours of foreign language credit may be applied to
the Logic, Language, Semiotics area of the General Education
requirements.
