Campus Visit Tips

Campus visits include both a student-guided tour and an information session with an Admissions Counselor.  Tours are led by Winthrop Ambassadors (student volunteers) and typically show a residence hall room in addition to the cafeteria, West Health, Physical Education, and Wellness Center, and other campus buildings. The tours are given regardless of rain or shine and last around an hour and a half, so be sure to wear proper attire, including comfortable walking shoes. Climate and current weather conditions are also available on the Visitors' Center web pages.

Campus visits originate in Joynes Hall, which serves as the Visitors Center and the Office of Admissions. Visitor parking is available on site. Visitors Center hours are 8:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Self-guided campus walking tour guide booklets, as well as maps and admissions information, are available outside of Joynes Hall for after-hours visitors. Arrangements for a group visit (6 or more students) should be made by calling the Office of Admissions.

When visiting Winthrop, we hope that you will spend some time getting to know our campus, students, and staff.  We encourage you to bring a camera to document your visit and to come prepared with plenty of questions.  Both our Admissions staff and our Ambassadors would be happy to answer your questions and provide you with any information that you need.  If you are wondering what questions to ask during a campus visit, here are some suggestions.

  • Are professors readily available outside of the classroom?
  • Would I often work with other students on projects inside or outside of the classroom?
  • What types of services are available for students on campus?  Health and Counseling?  Tutoring?  Career services?
  • What types of opportunities are available for learning outside of the classroom?  Study abroad?  Internships?  Learning communities?
  • What are the most popular extracurricular activities?
  • Are jobs available on campus?
  • How many students live on campus?  Are students required to live on campus?
  • Can I have a car on campus?  What is the cost?
  • What types of dining locations are available on campus?
  • Also, ask your ambassador about his/her major, activities, and experiences here at Winthrop!

For local accommodations and attractions, driving distances and directions, and other information on the area, check out the Visitors' Center. If you are spending the evening in Rock Hill, inquire about the Winthrop rate which is made available to our visitors by many area hotels. If time allows, be sure to check out a Winthrop athletic event, musical performances and theatre productions, or one of the many events sponsored by Dinkins Student Union programming board.  If you are missing school to visit Winthrop, we will be happy to provide a school excuse for students who participate in the full campus visit experience, including a scheduled tour.
