Click on the sections below for more information about being a telephone interviewer with the Center for Public Opinion & Policy Research (CPOPR).
Our interviewers are at the heart of what we do at the CPOPR. Interviewers collect data for research projects by administering surveys to respondents over the phone. Interviewers work in a calling center at a computer station for 3-4 hours at a time alongside several other interviewers. We expect interviewers to demonstrate professionalism and courtesy over the phone with potential respondents, and dedicate themselves to gaining survey cooperation, even from reluctant respondents.
The CPOPR looks for motivated and reliable individuals with the ability to learn, adhere to proper survey methodology, and speak with all types of people over the phone.
The CPOPR offers flexible part-time hours, casual dress, and a friendly work environment. Interviewers also have the opportunity to speak with people across South Carolina, and occassionally across the entire South.
As a CPOPR interviewer, you support academic research at Winthrop University and contribute to policy research for the state of South Carolina. Every call you make as an interviewer contributes to the discussion and decision-making on important issues.
Interviewers have the ability to create their own schedule.
Current CPOPR calling hours:
Monday-Friday: 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Saturday: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Sunday: 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The CPOPR will hire new interviewers on an as-needed basis.
Definitely! Conducting scientific public opinion research demands that interviewers adhere to proper survey research methodology. All new interviewers will receive general interviewer training. Successful completion of training is a prerequisite to continued employment. In addition, interviewers may be asked to attend project-specific training and/or refresher training sessions throughout their time with the CPOPR. All training is paid.
For more information about interviewer training, see Interviewer Training.
All applicants must be able to read at an 8th-grade level, have a clear telephone voice, and have significant computer experience. No prior interviewing experience is necessary.
Candidates are typically those looking for flexible temporary work interested in contributing to research and decision-making in South Carolina!
