Section 508 Requirement
(k) Text Only Alternative:
A text-only page, with equivalent information or functionality, shall be provided to make a Web site comply with the provisions of this part, when compliance cannot be accomplished in any other way. The content of the text-only page shall be updated whenever the primary page changes.
Creating a text-only version of a Web site should be done when there is no other way to make the content accessible, or when it offers significant advantages over the main version. The text-only version must provide the same information and functionality of the main version.
Keep in mind that having a text-only version of a Web site does not solve the problems of accessibility. Although text-only sites are helpful for blind and mobile device users, such sites do not address the needs of those with hearing impairments, learning disabilities, etc.
Winthrop University purchased a server-based tool that generates a customizable "text-only" view of your content. The solution called LIFT Text Transcoder removes the need for you to generate, store, and maintain your own text-only version and makes your pages instantly more accessible. On September 29, 2006, the text-only link was added to the university home page.
Please contact the Web developer for further information regarding text-only pages.
For your convenience, you may also wish to download a printer-friendly Section 508 checklist (pdf).
