Division of University Relations

Winthrop’s University Relations activities encompass community relations, government relations, communications and marketing, and university events. The mission of the division is to enhance communications and relationships with Winthrop’s many constituents, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, parents, visitors, the media, the education community, public officials, and the general public. With the creative use of diverse communications strategies, the University Relations division conveys the breadth, diversity, and value of the Winthrop experience, while also providing feedback to university leaders from these varied stakeholders. Staff provide honest, timely, and useful information; help the leadership team understand, anticipate, and manage issues; support Winthrop’s strategic goals; advance the university’s identity, brand, messages, and reputation; and provide support to campus offices and external groups seeking to hold events at campus facilities.

Perez, JeffDr. L. Jeffrey Perez, vice president for University Relations, is the primary spokesperson for Winthrop and serves as the university’s public affairs strategist and communications adviser to the president.

Prior to Winthrop, Perez served as vice president for external affairs at The Citadel, overseeing a division responsible for media relations, public affairs, and marketing. He also previously worked at Shawnee State University in Ohio for three years as executive director of communications and government affairs, where he oversaw media and community relations and coordinated the university’s government relations.

In New York state, Perez was employed in several communication, government policy, and public service positions. He was the director of public affairs for the Charter Schools Institute of the State University of New York; director of communication services at the headquarters of the State University of New York; and the director of research and a government relations representative for the New York State School Boards Association.

Perez earned a Bachelor of Science degree in foreign service from Georgetown University, a master’s degree from Binghamton University in New York, and a Ph.D. in American history from the College of William and Mary.
