Below is very important information and instructions regarding Thanksgiving through Winter Break residence hall closing. Closing for the break is very different this year due to the university’s effort to mitigate risk of COVID-19 spread and the required COVID-19 testing announced to the Winthrop community. The closing information applies to all residents in all residence halls, INCLUDING Courtyard and Roddey.
Residential students are strongly encouraged to seek testing at DHEC’s Winthrop Coliseum mobile site 72 hours prior to their Thanksgiving check-out date and to discuss plans if a student must quarantine or isolate. Students are encouraged to complete the Pre-Registration Process before going to the testing site.
Residence halls will close for Thanksgiving Break promptly at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 24, 2020. You will not have access to your residence hall after the 9:00 a.m. closing time. No meals will be served after 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 24th in Thomson. YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO RETURN YOUR ROOM KEY UPON YOUR DEPARTURE. Your room key will be reissued to you upon confirmation of a negative COVID-19 test result in January 2021. Even though the residence halls will be locked, the university is not responsible for residents' property. Please take all valuable items (including textbooks, electronic chargers, and medication) home with you to prevent theft or loss. Residents will not be allowed to reenter their residence halls after 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 24, 2020.
On November 16 and 17, 2020 Resident Assistants will be hosting mandatory floor meetings on Zoom to review the expectations for residents regarding their residence hall check out. You are expected to clean your room and bathroom (where applicable) and dispose of trash to the dumpster outside your residence hall. You are also encouraged to submit a work request at the hall office for any damages or repairs that need to occur. Empty, defrost your MicroFridge, and clean up standing water (condensation). Leave the doors ajar for ventilation. Finally move personal belongings away from A/C or heating units in the event HVAC maintenance issues arise during the remote instruction and break period. If you are returning to the same room in the spring, you do not have to take everything home. Students who are changing rooms or are moving off campus, must take everything home.
Before you depart, you will need to return your room key. You will receive your room key in January at check-in at the Shack at Winthrop Lake.
By each hall office, you will find pre-labeled envelopes. Find your envelope, place your key and fold it closed. Place it in the designate box/container as indicated by signage.
If you have already returned home for the semester and have not returning your room key, please follow the instructions below to mail your key back to campus.
Failure to return your key by December 2nd, 2020 will result in a recore of your door and you will be responsible for the charge associated with it.
Limited housing arrangements may be made during remote instruction for the following groups. You MUST, however, be approved by the Department of Residence Life to stay on campus during the remote instruction period. If you are approved to stay on campus, additional housing and meal plan fees will apply. The deadline to apply for special housing is Wednesday, November 18 before 12:00 Noon:
To begin the Remote Instruction / Break Housing Request and Approval Process:
THE DEADLINE TO COMPLETE THE REMOTE INSTRUCTION/BREAK HOUSING REQUEST IS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2020 BEFORE NOON.
If approved, you will receive an approval email, which you MUST SHOW ON DEMAND to the hall office throughout the remote learning/break period to be admitted into the residence hall.
Room Change for Spring 2021:
If you are making a room change for Spring semester, you MUST BE COMPLETELY MOVED OUT OF YOUR CURRENT ROOM BEFORE LEAVING CAMPUS.
Moving out of Residence Hall:
If you are moving out of the residence halls at the end of the semester, please complete the following:
If you did not have a roommate this semester, you must have your room set up for a new roommate to move-in in January. Residents who have taken over the entire room will be fined. This does not apply to students who paid for a private room or have an accommodation with the Office of Accessibility.
If you are interested in changing your room status to private, please contact residencelife@winthrop.edu. Private Room rate will apply.
