Winthrop Recreation Advisory Council (WRAC) is a student led group committed to facilitating a positive environment in recreation services, which encourages student development and leadership by providing members an opportunity to create, organize, and implement recreational programs to the Winthrop and Rock Hill communities.
WRAC was developed so that student employees from Recreational Services and West Center users could express issues and concerns regarding their work environment. Students anonymously voted on twelve of their peers to represent the group and to act as liaisons between the student staff and professional staff on issues regarding employment and recreational services programs. WRAC involves at least one person from each program department in Recreational Services including: aquatics, facilities, fitness, climbing wall, intramural sports and club sports.
In addition to discussing employment issues, WRAC offers members the opportunity to create their own recreationally motivated events. The events promote the West Center and programs offered through the Office of Recreational Services. Members are responsible for all aspects of event planning including: coming up with the idea, delegating job responsibilities, getting sponsors, marketing, implementing risk management procedures, budgeting, set-up, clean-up, full implementation and follow-through. Members will enhance their resumes and professional work habits, thus enhancing their potential after graduation.
By leading recreation programs and events, students will learn how to get sponsors, market events, implement risk management procedures, delegate jobs, as well as work as a team. By gaining knowledge of program development procedures, students can enhance their resumes and obtain vital experience relevant to the professional world. Students will learn about graduate school and graduate assistantship opportunities in the field of recreation.
