Faculty & Staff

April 25, 2018

Dear Colleagues:

We are quickly approaching the end of the spring semester. This is an exciting, and busy, time for everyone as we prepare to celebrate our students’ achievements at May Commencement ceremonies. Before we close out the semester, I wanted to update you on a few items below:

Board of Trustees Action
Trustees unanimously approved at the April 6 meeting to expand the graduate program offerings in the Richard W. Riley College of Education by adding two Master of Education degrees in learning design and technology, and another in teacher leadership. The two programs will be offered beginning in 2019.

Recent Award Winners
We celebrated many deserving individuals at the annual Faculty, Staff and Retirees Ceremony. Join me in congratulating the following award winners:
-Distinguished Professor: Professor of Biology Janice Chism, who became the first faculty member to receive all four of Winthrop’s teaching awards.
-Outstanding Junior Professor: Assistant Professor of Mathematics Zach Abernathy and Assistant Professor of Computer Science Andrew Besmer
-Jane LaRoche Award for Excellence in Graduate Instruction: Associate Professor of Curriculum and Pedagogy Lisa Harris
-Winthrop Award of Excellence: Professor of Chemistry Robin Lammi
-Faculty Student Life Award: Professor of Fine Arts Karen Stock
-Staff Member of the Year: Graduate School Admissions Coordinator Daniela Aguilar
-Mary Spann Richardson Award: Women’s Tennis Head Coach Cid Carvalho
Also during the ceremony, we honored our retirees and employees who reached their 10-, 20-, 30- and 40-year state service milestones.

D.B. Johnson Society Recognition Wall
On April 4, members of the D.B. Johnson Society, which is comprised of those who have made planned giving arrangements to benefit Winthrop, gathered in the DiGiorgio Campus Center lobby for the unveiling of the D.B. Johnson Society recognition wall. The wall, which lists current and eternal donors, is located between the Winthrop Bookstore and the information desk. When you’re in the area, please take a moment to look at this tribute to Winthrop’s generous donors.

Women’s Tennis – Big South Champions
Congratulations to the women’s tennis team on capturing the Big South championship this past weekend. This marks the program’s 20th Big South title, and the team now moves on to the NCAA Championship. The team will find out who it will face in the first round of the NCAA Championship on Tuesday, May 1. Winthrop was honored to host this year’s men’s and women’s tennis Big South tournament at the Rock Hill Tennis Center. Thanks to those who helped with this week-long event.

Facilities Projects
This summer is going to be one of the busiest we have had in a while in terms of construction. Currently, the Thurmond Building roof replacement, a 150-day project, is underway and includes shingle removal, repair of the roof deck and internal downspouts, and installation of a new roof system. Other upcoming projects include the Byrnes Auditorium roof replacement, repairs to Wofford Hall’s eighth floor and the replacement of Margaret Nance Hall’s fire alarms.

As always, thank you for all that you do for Winthrop, and thank you for helping make this such as successful spring semester.
