Faculty & Staff

March 20, 2018

Dear Colleagues:

Campus was a bit quieter last week as Spring Break was underway. Many students used it to spend time with family, while others opted to volunteer through the Alternative Spring Break program. Nearly 40 students spent time in New Orleans, Louisiana; Chestertown, Maryland; and Asheville, North Carolina, improving the environment, helping the homeless and engaging in service learning. Thanks to the Center for Career and Civic Engagement for offering such a memorable and service-focused opportunity for our students.

Now that we’re all back and focused on the last half of the semester, here are a few updates:

New Alumni Representative to the Board of Trustees/Upcoming Board Meeting
Alumni chose Isaiah “Reggie” Venning ’95, ’00, to fill the alumni representative seat on the Board of Trustees. Isaiah, who has remained active with Winthrop in various ways as well as with Rock Hill’s Community Relations Council and his fraternity, will serve a six-year term beginning July 1. I talked to Isaiah and welcomed him to the board, and he expressed his excitement to serve his alma mater at this level. Please congratulate Isaiah on this achievement when you see him on campus.

In other board news, trustees will meet April 5-6. Our six committees will meet on Thursday, April 5, and the full board will hold its meeting on the afternoon of Friday, April 6.

Campus Climate Survey Results
We will soon share the results of our first-ever Campus Climate Survey which ran March 27-April 25, 2017, with the goals of generating data on the nature and extent of sexual harassment/assault at Winthrop, determining perceptions about how well campus authorities and local law enforcement handle reports of sexual harassment/assault; identifying campus constituencies in need of support, and determining areas for improvement. Watch for an email from me in early April with more about what we learned and how we are using that information to help ensure that Winthrop students feel safe on campus.

Vice President for Student Affairs Update
The VP for Student Affairs search is progressing well. Off-campus interviews were held March 9-10, and selected candidates will visit campus in mid-April. Stay tuned for more information on the candidates and their scheduled campus visits.

Upcoming Events
The coming weeks will be busy with various events. Please save the date for the following:

•Come-See-Me Festival – This annual festival, held April 12-21, features a variety of Winthrop events, including the popular Midnight Jazz & Blues (April 20) and the Tailgating/Fireworks Finale (April 21).
•Winthrop Night at the Ballpark – We will again host a Winthrop night with the Charlotte Knights at BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte. This popular and fun event will be Friday, April 27, at 7 p.m. Info on discounted tickets will soon be available.
•Faculty/Staff/Retirees Ceremony – Join us as we recognize nearly 50 retirees, 58 service award recipients, and many others on Tuesday, April 24, at 9:30 a.m. in McBryde Hall.

As always, thank you for all that you do for Winthrop.
