Faculty & Staff

January 16, 2018

Dear Colleagues:

Welcome back from what I hope was a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break. We have kicked off the spring semester and enjoyed a successful Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. More than 350 students spent their day off giving back, an impressive reflection of their commitment to service. Thanks to all involved!

In addition, join me in congratulating Vice President for Student Life Frank Ardaiolo as he received the 2018 Dream Keeper Award during the City of Rock Hill’s 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Prayer Breakfast. During the award presentation, Frank was described as a man who exemplifies the ideals of social responsibility, political empowerment, diversity, racial harmony, nonviolence and unselfish service in our community. During his acceptance remarks Frank noted that he was “surprised but humbled” by the award. Those who know Frank are not surprised by his selection because he has contributed meaningful service and work over two decades to a variety of causes. Please congratulate Frank on this achievement when you see him.

I also wanted to update you on a couple other items of interest:

New Winthrop Logo Unveiling

Over the past several months, our marketing team has been working with FMB Advertising on a university-wide rebranding initiative. Part of our partnership with FMB included evolving our visual identity. After consulting groups both on and off campus for feedback, Winthrop’s new logo is ready for use. Please join me on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 11:15 a.m. in the DiGiorgio Campus Center lobby as we unveil the new logo. There will be refreshments and giveaways featuring the new logo, and the Winthrop Bookstore will offer additional merchandise for sale. We also will begin the transformation of our on-campus graphics later that day.

House Ways & Means Higher Education and Technical Colleges Subcommittee Presentation

On Jan. 10 I traveled to Columbia to update subcommittee members on Winthrop’s accomplishments, financial stability, and most importantly, our commitment to access and quality as reflected in our budget requests for fiscal year 2019. I noted to the committee that its support is key to the realization of these much-needed projects:
•Recurring Requests:
-$1.6 million for operational support of STEAM disciplines
-$750,000 for ongoing STEAM equipment upgrades
•Non-Recurring Requests:
-$4 million for instructional scientific equipment replacement
-$10.8 million for strategic risk management (fire alarm upgrades/enhancements, steam line renovation/enhancements, improved wi-fi coverage in classroom facilities, building infrastructure improvements, etc.)
-$7 million for Dacus Library renovations
-$10 million for an interdisciplinary arts technology facility
-$32 million for science complex renovation and addition
•Other Funds:
-$9 million for the support of the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA)

We will continue to watch as the state budget process unfolds. As always, thank you for all that you do in support of Winthrop.
