Faculty & Staff

November 20, 2017

Dear Colleagues:

It was good to see so many of you at various events throughout last week’s Homecoming activities. It’s one of my favorite events each year. I enjoy watching alumni rediscover Winthrop; hearing stories of past Winthrop days as shared by our “Golden Girls” during their 50th reunion; seeing school spirit displayed in so many creative ways; and, of course, cheering on the Eagles.

As this semester is quickly wrapping up, I wanted to take just a moment to update you on the following:

Strategic Plan Action Groups

As I mentioned previously, five strategic plan action groups have been formed to provide leadership and coordination in developing and monitoring future initiatives in the Winthrop Plan. These five groups are now meeting to continue the good work that already has been accomplished in the last year, as well as to provide more transparency throughout the Winthrop Plan process. I invite you to view the action groups, which are chaired by vice presidents and include faculty, staff and student representation. I’d like to thank each member for his or her service throughout this process.
I’d also like to especially thank the faculty, staff and students who served on the seven strategic plan working groups in 2015-16. The numerous hours you committed to these important groups provided the foundation for what became the Winthrop Plan, and I’m grateful for your hard work that got us to where we are now.

Internal Communications Update
For the last several months, a faculty and staff committee has been exploring ways to enhance the university’s internal communications efforts. The group has been focused on identifying the most streamlined and efficient manner of communicating a variety of information to faculty and staff. During tomorrow’s Staff Conference and December’s Faculty Conference meetings, Vice President for University Relations Jeff Perez will discuss and present the committee’s findings, recommendation and implementation timeline. My thanks go out to this group as well for undertaking this initiative.

Update on Executive Searches
Three executive searches are currently underway — Vice President for Finance and Business Affairs/CFO, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Vice President for Student Affairs (formerly Student Life). The Vice President for Finance and Business Affairs/CFO and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences searches have worked with our search consultant, Dr. Oscar Page of AGB, and have completed a review of all applications. We are pleased to report that we have had a significant pool of candidates who met our stated requirements for each position. The VP for Finance and Business Affairs/CFO search committee, led by P.N. Saksena, dean of the College of Business Administration, has recommended a slate of candidates for off-campus interviews that are planned for December. The Dean of CAS search committee, chaired by Gloria Jones, dean of University College, has narrowed the field of candidates and will continue to do so with the goal of identifying candidates to recommend for off-campus interviews that will be conducted in January. Our third search, VP for Student Affairs, will be posted online shortly. This search, led by Meg Webber, vice provost for academic quality, is scheduled for off-campus interviews in February.

Faculty/Staff Holiday Reception

A more formal email invitation will be coming to you shortly, but Laura and I would like for you to save the date of Wednesday, Dec. 6, for a 2-4 p.m. drop-in holiday reception at the President’s House. Come and enjoy good food and conversation with co-workers as we celebrate the holiday season. We hope to see you there.

As the end of the semester kicks into high gear, I want to thank you for your contributions to a successful fall semester. Please know that I value all that you do for Winthrop.

Sincerely,
Dan
