Members of the campus community:

We are all watching Hurricane Irma with great concern and are monitoring the latest weather updates and projected storm tracks. While there is still uncertainty on which track the storm will take, it does appear that the Carolinas will be affected by the storm in some way.

Winthrop is participating in meetings with the county’s Emergency Operations Committee to receive the most updated weather information. Governor Henry McMaster has declared a state of emergency for South Carolina and has urged residents to prepare in advance of the storm.

As of right now, Winthrop University will continue to conduct business as usual. We will continue monitoring the weather reports and will make you aware of any changes to our daily operations if the situation arises.

We understand that you may have family and friends living in areas that may be in the hurricane’s path, but we strongly urge you NOT to travel to areas that may soon be evacuated. You will face lane direction reversals and road closings, as well as add to already heavy evacuation traffic. You may also end up in a location where returning to campus will be difficult.

Please join me in offering thoughts and prayers for the safety of those who find themselves in the path of this historic storm.
