Dear Colleagues:
It was good to see so many of you at various events throughout last week's Homecoming
activities. It's one of my favorite events each year. I enjoy helping alumni rediscover
Winthrop; seeing school spirit displayed in so many creative ways; and, of course,
cheering on the Eagles.
As this semester is quickly wrapping up, I wanted to take just a moment to update
you on the following:
Rock Hill's Electric Bus System
Winthrop has committed $200,000 a year for the next five years towards the city's
new free electric bus system which is expected to start running in April 2019. The
system is funded by federal grants, a City of Rock Hill general fund contribution,
and support from partner organizations like Winthrop. The partnership includes Winthrop
advertising opportunities on and inside buses, at bus stands and more. This is a significant
investment, but one that will reap dividends for us, as word about Winthrop spreads
to thousands of newcomers to York County and to visitors the City of Rock Hill is
drawing to its world-class sports venues, including the new University Center right
next door to campus. We are strategically positioned as a well-regarded comprehensive
university in the midst of this local growth and development, but also in one of the
fastest growing areas of South Carolina. Winthrop will be a stop on two of the four
bus routes, providing students, faculty and staff a convenient option for getting
around the city as well.
Upcoming Holiday Events
I hope you will have the opportunity to join me at the following holiday events:
The 83rd annual Tree Lighting Celebration is on Friday, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m. on the
front lawn. This festive kick-off for the holiday season at Winthrop and the City's
Christmasville festival is always a lot of fun. Performances by the RockHettes and
several singing groups, free cookies and hot chocolate, and, of course, the lighting
of the historic magnolia tree are highlights of this free event. Following the tree
lighting, the Rock Hill Christmas Parade will begin in front of Winthrop. Be on the
lookout for Winthrop Admissions Ambassadors who will be greeting the crowd from atop
Winthrop's float.
The annual drop-in holiday reception is at the President's House on the afternoon
of Tuesday, Dec. 4. A more formal email invitation will be coming to you shortly.
Laura and I invite you into our home to enjoy good food and conversation with others
members of the Winthrop community.
As the end of the semester kicks into high gear with other holiday happenings, final
exams and Commencement, I want to thank you for your contributions to a successful
fall semester. Please know that I value all that you do for Winthrop.
Sincerely,
Dan
