Dear Colleagues:
I hope you are enjoying your summer. There are several things happening on campus
this month, such as Orientation sessions and web author trainings, but I also wanted
to update you on a few others:
Homecoming Tailgating Changes
As I’ve said before, Homecoming and Alumni Reunion festivities are among my favorite
Winthrop events. Tailgating before the Homecoming men’s basketball game is always
a fun time for students, alumni, faculty and staff, and it draws a large crowd. Since
the tailgating event grows larger each year, members of senior leadership and the
Homecoming committee have implemented a number of changes that will go into effect
for the Nov. 16 event. These important changes are designed to provide everyone with
a fun and safe tailgating experience. The summer edition of the Winthrop Magazine
comes out soon and will outline these changes, so I encourage you to familiarize yourself
with them and to help us spread the word to student groups, alumni and members of
the community. I hope to see you at tailgating this November.
Upcoming Board Meeting
Members of the Board of Trustees will be on campus for June 27-28 meetings. Committees
will meet on Thursday, June 27, and the full board will hold its meeting on the afternoon
of Friday, June 28. Among other action, they will set tuition and fees, and approve
our budget for 2019-20. More information, including agendas, will be emailed to the
campus as the meetings approach.
My Ride Bus System
As you know, Winthrop has partnered with the City of Rock Hill, Piedmont Medical
Center and Family Trust Federal Credit Union to help make the city’s My Ride free electric bus system a reality. Winthrop will be a stop on two of the four bus
routes, providing students, faculty and staff a convenient option for getting around
the city. You may have noticed that Route 1 service – which includes the Downtown/Knowledge
Park loop – began on June 10 and that buses have been traveling through campus. Full
service of all four routes will begin on July 1. Stops on campus include the intersection
of Scholars Walk and Memorial Circle near Kinard, Alumni Drive near the crosswalk
to the Courtyard, and midway down College Avenue on the gravel parking lot side. Please
do not block the bus stops for any reason.
As always, I thank you for your contributions and hard work as we prepare to welcome our students in August.
Sincerely,
Dan
