Members of the campus community:
We continue to watch carefully Hurricane Florence — its projected path has moved slightly
south, with more parts of South Carolina expected to be impacted by this powerful
storm. I want to stress that Hurricane Florence is without precedence in terms of
its direction, making predictions about its path highly speculative.
Based on the current forecast, Winthrop University will continue to conduct business
as usual today and Thursday. We are in constant contact with York County's Emergency
Operations Center, and will are prepared to make any changes to our daily operations
if the situation arises.
The best way to receive emergency information is through our WU Alert system. If
you have not signed up for WU Alert, you can do so at: https://apps.winthrop.edu/cellphone
The campus itself is at a high state of readiness. Sodexo is stocked in order to
continue providing food services, and our facilities staff is prepared, if needed,
with backup generators, fuel and other supplies and equipment.
As I've emphasized previously, while you may have family and friends living in areas
being evacuated, we strongly urge you NOT to travel to these areas, nor should students'
families pick them up and head back toward an evacuation area. Students should use
their best judgement regarding travel plans, but are responsible to work with their
professors regarding missed coursework and tests.
We will provide another update tomorrow no later than 2 p.m.
Sincerely,
Dan
