Faculty and Staff - May 10, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

It was so wonderful to celebrate in-person nearly 1,000 of our newest graduates during our recent Commencement ceremonies. Now that the spring semester is officially completed, it’s time to turn our attention to the numerous university activities that happen over the summer months. There is no doubt that a lot will be happening over and above Summer Session classes and facilities maintenance. I want to thank you for all that you will do over the next few months to help us welcome students in August.

Below are a few items that I wanted to bring to your attention:

Budget Process
We are approaching the home stretch of Winthrop’s 2021-22 budget process. The Board of Trustees will vote on the budget at the trustees’ meeting in June. I want to thank the finance and business team for its hard work that was required throughout this past year as we dealt with budget repercussions related to the pandemic and as we prepare for a, hopefully, more normal budget year starting July 1. More information will be shared about the budget once it is finalized and approved.

Community Vaccine Clinic Moving Locations
The Rock Hill Vaccination Clinic, which has been operating at the Galleria Mall and where many of us received our COVID-19 vaccinations, will soon be moving locations. The Galleria Mall clinic will close on May 14 and, beginning May 18, the city will open a smaller vaccination site at the City Operations Center located at 757 South Anderson Road. The Operations Center vaccination site will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday. I encourage you, if you haven’t already, to please make an appointment to get your vaccine. Appointments may be made here, and appointments for second doses will be made at the time the first shot is given. I am very appreciative of the collaborative effort between the city and Piedmont Medical Center, which has resulted in nearly 50,000 vaccines being administered to date.

Esports Wins National Title
Congratulations to our esports team which defeated Northwood University on May 2 to be crowned the Rocket League National Champions at the Collegiate Esports National Championship. In addition to that good news, sophomore Tristian Correll was named the tournament’s Rocket League Most Valuable Player. In just its second year in existence, Winthrop’s team has made quite the mark on the esports scene. Well done on a great season!

Winthrop Plan Survey Reminder
In a campus-wide e-mail last week, I requested your feedback on our strategic plan, the Winthrop Plan. If you have not had a chance to complete the 5-15 minute survey, please be sure to complete it by Friday, May 14. Survey responses will be kept confidential, and the feedback can help us continue our work to review the Winthrop Plan over the summer. Please complete the survey.

Summer Schedule Begins
Beginning today, the university will observe summer work hours. We are happy that we can continue to provide this modified summer work schedule that so many of you enjoy. Please be reminded that from May 10-Aug. 6, most offices will be open Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Friday, 8-11:30 a.m. Facilities Management and Campus Police will maintain regular work hours throughout the summer, and the hours of operation for Dacus Library are available on the Dacus website.

Thank you again for all of your hard work, and I hope you enjoy your summer!

Sincerely,

George
