As Dr. Hynd executes the many responsibilities of the Winthrop presidency, he is supported by his loving family.
The first lady, Dr. Alison Hynd, has a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Georgia. Her focus has been on pediatric neuropsychology. In fact, she worked as a pediatric neuropsychologist for a number of years in New York for a special needs preschool, serving children with language and communication disorders.
Alison is committed to serving in the community and has volunteered for the last several years at the Medical University of South Carolina in the Children’s Hospital. She also is the vice chair of Gates School Planning Committee to bring a charter school for dyslexic children to the South Carolina Lowcountry. The school will use the Orton-Gillingham approach. Alison’s interest in this endeavor grew out of her professional experiences in New York. Finally, Alison is committed to sharing awareness of pediatric cancer and has served as an advisor to a Love Your Melon campus crew.
The Hynds have two daughters: Erin, who is a first year medical student at the Medical University of South Carolina, and Elise, who graduated from the University of Georgia and will be continuing her education at UGA in business analytics. Dr. Hynd also has two grown children from a previous marriage: April, who lives in Hawaii; and Brian, who lives in Oregon.
