Office of New Student and Family Programs

Every year, Winthrop University’s Office of New Student and Family Programs introduces over 2,000 incoming freshmen, transfer, and post-traditional students and their families to the campus. Orientation is a program that is designed to assist new students and their families in adjusting to life as a student at Winthrop University.

The program promotes discussion among new students, their families, continuing students, faculty, and staff on the expectations and perceptions of the campus community. We offer several types of Orientation programs to meet the needs of our students and their families: Freshman Orientation, Transfer Orientation, and Family Orientation. We also offer a Fall Orientation and Spring Orientation program.

We look forward to welcoming you to campus! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our office via e-mail or by phone (803/323-2387). You can also check out our Facebook page. Welcome to Winthrop!

Freshman Orientation

Freshman Orientation is a required two-day overnight program beginning at 8 a.m. on day one and ending at approximately 5 p.m. on day two. During Orientation, students are paired with an Orientation Leader to receive first-hand information and experiences. Freshmen will meet other freshmen, stay overnight in a Residence Hall, meet with and plan their fall schedule with an academic advisor, and register for classes. Please note that Day 2 of Freshman Orientation lasts until 5 p.m. You should make plans to stay until this time and register for a session that will allow you to stay for the entire program.

Please note that the Fall Freshman Orientation session (Session V) is not an overnight session. Residential students will move directly into their assigned residence hall room on the morning of Day 1. Commuter students will return to their off-campus residence at the end of the program on Day 1 and return in the morning for the Day 2 events and to register for fall classes.

Transfer Orientation

Winthrop offers two types of Transfer Orientation sessions to meet the unique needs of our transfer and post-traditional students:

Transfer Orientation Full Day Session is a one-day program beginning at 8 a.m. and ending around 4 p.m. The session includes experiences designed to allow students to learn about resources, complete course evaluations, meet with academic advisors, and register for classes. Orientation Leaders are paired with groups of students to assist them with their transition to Winthrop University.

Advising/Registration Only is an opportunity for transfer and post-traditional students already familiar with Winthrop University to come to campus to be advised and register for classes for the fall semester. Students will also have the opportunity to complete various tasks that will help make their transition into the University community a smooth one.

Family Orientation

Family Orientation is held in conjunction with each Freshman and Transfer Full Day Orientation session for parents and family members of new students. Family members are encouraged to attend Family Orientation to learn more about Winthrop and ways they can help support their student as they transition into the Winthrop Community.

Family members attending Freshman or Transfer Orientation will need to make any overnight arrangements. Accommodations in Residence Halls are only for freshmen attending the two-day summer Freshman Orientation.
