This year's events will have a Mardi Gras theme.

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop’s annual Homecoming week from Feb. 5-10 will offer several student events with a Mardi Gras theme, as well as professional entertainment and action-packed sports.

Homecoming Committee Chair Debbie Garrick said she expects a lot of alumni to attend the festivities during the weekend. "They're looking forward to returning to Winthrop to see old friends and to be a part of the excitement of Homecoming," said Garrick, executive director of alumni relations.

The week kicks off with the Tip-Off Pep Rally, scheduled for Monday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. in McBryde Hall. The event will feature appearances by the men’s and women’s basketball teams, the pep band, the dance team, cheerleaders and Big Stuff.

The Tip-Off will get the crowd ready for the men’s basketball game on Tuesday, Feb. 6. The team will take on Liberty University at 7 p.m. After the game, the 2007 Homecoming Court will be introduced with six candidates for king and six candidates for queen.

All student Homecoming events have been planned with a Mardi Gras theme. "Creole in the Caf" on Wednesday, Feb. 6, will be a full Mardi Gras meal during dinner hours in Thomson, complete with PoBoy sandwiches, blackened shrimp alfredo, King Cake and other delicacies from the Big Easy. Later that night, the Resident Students’ Association will host an 8 p.m. showing of the “Blues Brothers” movie in Tillman Auditorium. On Thursday, Feb. 8, the third annual student talent show will take place in Tillman Auditorium at 8 p.m., emceed by comedian Alexandra McHale.

The theme will continue with a Mardi Gras masquerade party at 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9. To be held in McBryde Hall, the party for students and the alumni will feature entertainment from zydeco group Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band, more food with a New Orleans flavor and a cash bar.
