ROCK HILL, S.C. - Three graduating seniors received the Tillman Award at Winthrop University’s spring commencement exercises on May 9 at Winthrop Coliseum.

The Tillman Award is the university’s highest academic honor. Established in 1940 to honor former S.C. Governor Benjamin Ryan Tillman, the award recognizes the graduate who has most consistently met the demands of academic excellence.

The award winners, who received the Tillman Award bronze medallions, were: Patricia Coimbra, an accounting and finance major from Sao Paulo, Brazil; Ellen Gilliam Stewart, an education major from Florence, S.C.; Stephanie Sharon Cantrell, a dance major from Mill Spring, N.C.

Coimbra will start work in July at SPX Corporation in Charlotte, N.C., in the internal audit department. Stewart will teach first grade this fall at Briggs Elementary School in Florence, while Cantrell will audition for dance companies in Washington, D.C., or return to teach dancing in the Asheville, N.C., area.
