ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – The Winthrop University Board of Trustees unanimously elected its first African-American chairman, Glenn McCall, who served as the vice chair for the past year. Kathy Bigham, a previous board chair, was elected as vice chair. The two were elected during the Board of Trustees’ June 22 meeting.

Both are Rock Hill residents and will serve one-year terms beginning July 1.

McCall is a retired senior vice president of Bank of America, where he led the consumer customer behavior analysis group. He was first appointed to the Winthrop board in 2011 as the Education Superintendent designee. He was then legislatively appointed to an at-large seat in 2014.

As chair, McCall will be an ex-officio member to the Winthrop University Foundation Board of Directors.

Bigham, who is retired as president of Thursdays Too restaurant in Rock Hill, is a 1973 Winthrop graduate. First appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2003 as the governor’s designee, she resigned from that position in 2006 and successfully ran for a legislatively elected seat in the same year. In the past 12 years, Bigham has served as chair, vice chair, committee chair and head of the search committee when President Dan Mahony was selected.

Trustees also recognized with resolutions the service of retiring board member Karl Folkens of Florence, the current chairman who has served on the board in various capacities for 20 years, and Scott Middleton of Columbia, the outgoing Winthrop Alumni Association representative.

In other board action, members:

*Approved resolutions to honor Tadean Page, outgoing chair of the Council of Student Leaders and the student representative to the board; J.P. McKee, retiring vice president for finance and business; and Frank Ardaiolo, retiring vice president for student life.

*Approved a Bachelor of Professional Studies degree that will serve adult learners who have associate degrees or 60 transferrable credit hours who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree. This program will now go before the Commission on Higher Education for approval, with a projected start date of fall 2019.

*Ratified matching funds for a U.S. Economic Development Administration grant to replace an electrical substation, equipment and cabling.
