ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University will host a coaching leadership professional development conference on June 12.

Coaches of all sports are invited to attend the conference, which lasts from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the West Center. It is called “Beyond the X’s & O’s.”

Session topics will cover strength and conditioning, coaching leadership, athlete wellness, legal responsibilities, academic readiness and coaching motivation, according to organizer Joni Boyd, assistant professor of exercise science in Winthrop’s Department of Physical Education, Sport & Human Performance. The conference counts as professional development for those in the field.

The keynote lunch speaker is Jimmy “Moose” Wallace, who was inducted into the 2015 South Carolina Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame after almost four decades of coaching high school football. He coached high school football for 28 years at Lewisville and later Northwestern. During his coaching career, his teams combined for 11 region championships, 14 upper state games, nine state championship games and four state championship titles (1986, 1989, 1993, 2011).

Wallace is known and respected for the countless players from his program that have been promoted to the college and NFL ranks. Twenty-three quarterbacks coached by Wallace have gone on to play college sports including current NFL players Benjamin Watson and Cordarrelle Patterson, and 2009 National Gatorade Football Player of the Year Justin Worley.

Wallace is now a Master Trainer for USA Football.

The conference website can be found here.

Registration is limited to 75. The cost is $25 and includes lunch. There is an optional CPR recertification session after lunch that is available for an additional $40.
