Finalists for Vice President for Student Affairs To Visit Campus April 8-20

 The finalists are: Becky Spurlock, Parris Carter, Gigi Secuban and Shelia Higgs Burkhalter.
 Presentations will be held in Dina’s Place, DiGiorgio Campus Center, from 11-11:45 a.m. on April 10, 13, 17 and 20; receptions are immediately following from 11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. in the DiGiorgio Campus Center lobby. Each finalist also will participate in a series of interviews with faculty, staff, administrators and students.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Four finalists for the position of Winthrop University’s Vice President for Student Affairs will visit the campus for interviews April 8-20.

The finalists are:
Becky Spurlock, currently the senior associate dean of student life at Sewanee—The University of the South in Tennessee. She will visit from April 8-10.

Parris Carter, currently assistant vice president for student affairs at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He will visit from April 11-13.

Gigi Secuban, currently associate vice chancellor for student affairs & director of the Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Relations at the University of Illinois—Urbana-Champaign. She will visit from April 15-17.

Shelia Higgs Burkhalter, currently vice president, Division of Student Affairs at the University of Baltimore in Maryland. She will visit from April 18-20.
 
Interested community members are invited to an open presentation by each finalist entitled “Leading a Comprehensive Division of Student Affairs Toward 2025” and/or to a drop-in reception following these presentations.

Presentations will be held in Dina’s Place, DiGiorgio Campus Center, from 11-11:45 a.m. on April 10, 13, 17 and 20; receptions are immediately following from 11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. in the DiGiorgio Campus Center lobby. Each finalist also will participate in a series of interviews with faculty, staff, administrators and students.

Debra Boyd, Winthrop provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, noted that the candidates have a wealth of experience and expertise, and praised members of the search committee, chaired by Meg Webber, vice provost for academic quality and innovation, for their good work: “We all look forward to hosting these candidates, engaging in dialogue with them about the contributions of student affairs in realizing the institutional mission and previewing their individual styles of leadership,” Boyd said.

Feedback on each candidate will be solicited by way of electronic questionnaire for those who participate in the campus interview process.

The Division of Student Life/Student Affairs has more than 97 staff members and employs 300+ students in a variety of roles. Areas under the leadership of the vice president for student affairs include the dean of students’ office, student life, career and civic engagement, residence life, dining services, campus police, the campus bookstore, and health and counseling services.
