ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA—Did you know that South Korea is one of the few countries that has hosted or will host the Summer Olympics (1988), the Men’s World Cup Soccer (2002), the Winter Olympics (2018), as well as many other sporting events?

Because of this sports overload, Jason Chung, director of Winthrop University’s sport management program, and Seth Jenny, assistant professor of physical education, will offer students an exciting opportunity this spring: a new course that will take them on a two-week trip through South Korea.

Listed as SPMA 325 (or SPFA 650 for graduate students) in the course catalogue, students will tour the country from May 15-28, 2017, with Jenny and Chung, a South Korean native.

“Students will be able to experience a different culture especially in the area of sports,” he said. “It will be different from a typical trip to Korea, as I will be able to lead the students to local places, introduce them to local culture, and most importantly, sport events, facilities, organizations, etc. I want students to have fun and learn other cultures.”

The sports culture is very different from what students typically experience in the United States, he added.

Jenny referred to the course as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students.

“I want the students to experience world travel and develop an appreciation, curiosity and love for other cultures,” he said.

The course requires a minimum of eight students. Costs are still being finalized.
