ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Just over 61 percent of Winthrop student-athletes achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average for the 2015-16 academic year to earn Big South Conference Presidential Honor Roll distinction, the league office announced this week.

Winthrop placed 165 out of 270 student-athletes on the prestigious list, including 11 athletes who achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA for the year. As a conference, 1,903 out of 3,459 student-athletes—55.02 percent—earned recognition as Presidential Honor Roll scholars and 138 finished the year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Winthrop ranked third on the Presidential Honor Roll among the 11 Big South schools with its 61.11 percent. The Eagles were one of five members to have at least 60 percent on the list.

“Since arriving at Winthrop this month, I’ve seen a relentless commitment to educational excellence and am proud of this year’s ranking,” said Athletics Director Ken Halpin. “As we move ahead, I look forward to continued excellence and academic achievement by our student-athletes. While they always aspire to compete for championships on the fields and courts, it is ultimately their successes in the classroom that can pay lifelong dividends.”

High Point led all Big South institutions for the second straight year, as HPU had 74.37 percent of its 238 student-athletes on the Presidential Honor Roll. UNC Asheville placed 69.10 percent of its 178 student-athletes on the list. Winthrop was third, reaching 60 percent for the second time in four years.

“The Big South Conference has always taken a lot of pride in the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes,” said Big South Commissioner Kyle Kallander. “To have more than half of all student-athletes make the Presidential Honor Roll for the second consecutive year is a reflection of the outstanding individuals in the conference and their priorities, as well as our athletic departments’ commitment to providing support and resources to academic services. We are all extremely proud of the achievements of these fine young men and women.”
