ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - The first Winthrop University student to receive the new President’s Award for Academic Excellence is a business administration major from Spartanburg, South Carolina.

President Dan Mahony presented the award Dec. 19 at Commencement to Meghan Gabrielle Jones, who was the undergraduate with the highest cumulative GPA. She earned a degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting.

Throughout her time at Winthrop, Jones participated in many organizations including Winthrop Episcopalian Lutheran Campus Ministry, the Peer Mentor program, the Winthrop Orchestra, Alpha Lambda Delta honors society and Beta Alpha Psi Accounting honors society.

In January, she will begin an internship with PricewaterhouseCoopers in its audit department. She plans to attend graduate school in the fall of 2016 at Clemson University.

The award, formally called the Tillman Award, was renamed this fall. Mahony said the funding for the Tillman Award was exhausted in 1986. The president said the university sees the importance of recognizing students’ outstanding academic achievement so Provost Debra Boyd and Mahony contributed personal funds to support the creation of the new President’s Award for Academic Excellence.
