Winthrop University President Schedules His Investiture at May Commencement

Quick Facts

Mahony said he has given the inauguration a lot of thought, talked with a number of people and decided against doing a stand-alone event.
In a campus-wide e-mail sent today to faculty and staff, he said he would rather spend the money elsewhere and prefer to have people spend their time focused on other, more critical activities.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop President Dan Mahony announced today that he will hold his investiture into office as the university’s 11th president in conjunction with May Commencement.

In a campus-wide e-mail sent today to faculty and staff, Mahony said he has been asked about his plans for a presidential inauguration. “I have given this a lot of thought, talked with a number of people and decided against doing a stand-alone inauguration event,” he wrote. “Typically, inaugurations are large celebrations that honor the new president.

“Frankly, I would rather spend the money elsewhere and prefer to have people spend their time focused on other, more critical activities. We have a number of needs across the institution and as I look at our list of priorities, an inauguration celebration ranks very low.”

Mahony, who began his tenure as president on July 1, said that details will be finalized early in the spring term and shared with the campus community. He anticipates making the investiture a part of a larger ceremony recognizing student achievement as the center of what Winthrop focuses on as an institution. The undergraduate Commencement will be on May 7 at the Winthrop Coliseum.
