ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Martin McDonald, a valued Winthrop University employee who accomplished so much and inspired so many, passed away Nov. 2. He was 57.

McDonald transferred to Winthrop in 1979 to pursue his degree. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in computer science. A decade later, he earned an M.B.A., also from Winthrop.

McDonald followed his interest in accounting and sat for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam in 1992. McDonald didn’t just pass all parts of the exam in his first sitting; he received the highest score in the state.

He returned to Winthrop in 1995 as the information resource coordinator for the accounting and student financial services areas. Throughout his career, he wrote code for numerous special reports, created and maintained accounting schedules for financial statement reporting, and ensured compliance with various tax reporting requirements.

“Martin had a warm, inviting personality with a wit that could brighten anyone’s day,” Vice President for Finance and Business J.P. McKee said in a campus-wide email. “Martin was born with cerebral palsy, and although his physical mobility was limited, he was able to accomplish so much and inspire so many. Martin will be missed.”

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Nov. 7 at Grandview Memorial Park Hollis Lakes in Rock Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family plans to establish a scholarship in his name. Gifts can be sent in memory of him to The Winthrop University Foundation in 302 Tillman Hall, Rock Hill, S.C., 29733.
