ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University will combine its graduate and undergraduate Commencements in December 2015 and then in May 2016, hold two undergraduate Commencement ceremonies and a separate graduate Commencement ceremony to accommodate growth.

Provost Debra Boyd told the Board of Trustees on Oct. 16 that the university will return to holding a combined event for the fall Commencement as it did before 2002. “This will remain a meaningful ceremony for those who have completed their degree requirements,” Boyd said. “We look forward to celebrating the achievements of our undergraduate and graduate students in this combined ceremony that will appropriately acknowledge the hard work and dedication that all of our students have exercised to reach this milestone.”

The combined Commencement will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, at Winthrop Coliseum.

Commencement Committee Co-Chairs DeeAnna Brooks and Tim Drueke said the number of May undergraduates and the number of family and friends who attended had increased in size over the years and was at capacity. There will now be a morning and an afternoon ceremony for the undergraduates on May 7. A separate graduate Commencement ceremony will be held on May 5.

For the May 7 undergraduate ceremonies, graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Visual and Performing Arts will be honored in one ceremony, while graduates of the College of Business Administration and the Richard W. Riley College of Education will be celebrated in an additional ceremony.
