ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — A post-traditional Winthrop University student who Human Nutrition Chair Wanda Koszewski calls a “role model for all students” has won a prestigious national scholarship.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation congratulated graduate student David Stoner with its Commission on Dietetic Registration Diversity Scholarship. Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Karen Kedrowski and Koszewski presented Stoner with the $5,000 check on Sept. 16.

Stoner, who currently resides in Monroe, North Carolina, said the scholarship would be a big help as he pursues his studies. He plans to return the favor once he graduates from the program in May 2016.

“I just want to help as many people as possible [in this field],” he said, adding that he’d like to focus on preventing obesity.

Stoner applied for the scholarship in March based on a professor’s recommendation. He found out he won a few days before receiving the check.

“It’s fantastic for us,” Koszewski said. “The faculty say he’s very deserving and speak very highly of him. He’s a great ambassador for our program, and it shows again that we have the best students in the field.”

Stoner entered the human nutrition program last fall. He spent 20 years in the United States Air Force and decided he wanted to look into the food industry. He attended Johnson & Wales’ culinary program and worked in the industry before deciding on a master’s program in human nutrition. He also has an M.B.A. from the University of Phoenix.

Scholarships from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation are made possible through contributions from academy members and corporate donors. For more information on the academy, visit its website.
