ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University remains one of the South's top public universities that convey bachelor's and master's degrees in the 2016 U.S. News & World Report's edition of "America's Best Colleges."

This year’s edition, which ranked Winthrop eighth among public universities in its category in the South, marks the 24th consecutive year that Winthrop has been in the top 10.

The Rock Hill-based institution placed 26th among all Southern public and private universities. The rankings were released on Sept. 9.

Winthrop made gains or held steady in key measurements of students, including:

•The freshman retention rate increased from 72 to 74 percent (based on a four-year average of cohorts).
•The student/faculty ratio remained at 14:1.
• The recruitment of freshmen in the top of their class climbed from 51 percent to 55 percent.

The U.S. News college rankings group schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and are frequently relied upon by students and parents considering higher education opportunities. U.S. News surveys colleges and universities each year and ranks nearly 1,400 of them in different categories.

Winthrop President Dan Mahony said that the U.S. News rankings continue to show that year in and year out, Winthrop students are offered a quality education.

"We’re certainly pleased that the quality education for which Winthrop is known has been recognized by U.S. News for the last 24 consecutive years. Winthrop’s student-focused academic environment prepares our graduates to be lifetime learners and leaders in their professions and communities,” said Mahony. “A Winthrop education is a transformative experience for our students.”

Over the past decade, Winthrop has consistently received third-party endorsements for its value, academic quality and sustainability efforts. Recently, Washington Monthly has named Winthrop a "best bang for the buck," and Princeton Review has listed the university among best Southeastern colleges and as a Green School.
