ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — The Winthrop University student body elected Ray McKetty and Alex Nowlin as the new president and vice president, respectively, of the Council of Student Leaders (CSL).

The two ran on a platform that promised to make CSL more inclusive and accessible to the student body by “mobilizing it and bringing it to our fellow Eagles,” said McKetty, an English major from Greenville, South Carolina.

But first on the to-do list for the 2015-16 academic year: establishing a good working relationship with the university’s incoming 11th president, Dr. Dan Mahony.

“Winthrop is going through a time of transition right now, and Alex and I want to do everything in our power to make sure that transition goes smoothly,” he said.

Another goal includes increasing enrollment and retention rates, said Nowlin, a political science major from Bluffton.

Both students are active members of the Winthrop community.

McKetty joined CSL in 2013 and has served as a resident assistant and office host on campus. Just this year he was inducted into the National Residence Hall Honorary. Nowlin, in addition to CSL, was also a resident assistant and is a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

The two agreed that they feel honored and humbled that the student body voted for them to lead its student government.

“We are so thankful for the support, and we're going to make sure anything and everything we do is for them,” McKetty said.
