ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution on June 19 thanking Acting President Debra Boyd for leading the institution during a year of transition.

A framed certificate was presented to Boyd by Chair Kathy Bigham during the board’s quarterly meeting in the DiGiorgio Campus Center.

“Debra ensured the continuation of the mission-critical work of providing a high quality experience for our students by leading ‘Team Winthrop’ in thinking strategically and by relying on collective participation and decision-making,” Bigham said.

The resolution outlined how Boyd has filled many capacities at Winthrop, including in the English department as a faculty member, director of composition, and chair; director of the university’s Office for Effective Teaching; dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; provost and vice president for academic affairs; and most recently as acting president.

Board members conveyed their deepest appreciation and warmest thanks to Boyd for her outstanding meritorious service to Winthrop during the previous 30 years in general and during this past year as acting president in particular. They anticipate she will help further in the presidential transition as continues in her role as provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Also at the meeting, board of trustees members approved a resolution to thank the 56-member President Search Advisory Committee appointed from the leadership of the students, faculty, staff and administration. Their work contributed to the selection of Dan Mahony, who comes to Rock Hill from Ohio where he was dean of the College of Education, Health and Human Services at Kent State University. He starts work on July 1 as Winthrop’s 11th president.

Also recognized at the meeting for his dedicated service was Ian Deas, the chair of the Council of Student Leaders and student representative to the board of trustees during the 2014-15 academic year. He received a resolution at the June 19 meeting for providing an eloquent voice on behalf of Winthrop University’s students both on and off-campus.

“He consistently shared thoughtful advice and counsel with the acting president and the board and devoted himself to the fulfillment of Winthrop University’s mission,” the resolution said. Deas graduated in May and plans to work in a Medical University of South Carolina research lab before pursuing the pharmacology program at Vanderbilt University in 2016.
