Junior Dance Majors Reveal Semester-Long Original Work at Choreography Showcase

Quick Facts

 Show times are 7 p.m. April 17-18 and 3 p.m. April 19. Tickets are $5 with a Winthrop ID or $10 without.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Throughout the semester, Winthrop University Assistant Professor of Dance Emily Morgan has watched nine junior dance majors create nine very different choreography pieces.

“I have a lot of one-on-one conversations with each choreographer, which allows us to dig fairly deeply into the choreographic process,” she said. “We work together in class twice a week, discussing different choreographic approaches and playing with their choreography, but each piece is wonderfully representative of each choreographer. I love seeing that.”

Now, the public can see the results of the students’ hard work at the Junior Choreography Showcase, opening April 17 in Johnson Theatre. The dance works are inspired by a number of ideas, such as a hatred of one’s body, the need for silence and the desire for unity.

Morgan said she is “amazed and impressed” by what the students have accomplished. She encouraged people to attend and see those accomplishments, particularly the April 18 show, after which the audience can participate in a special question and answer session with students.

The students are:

*Michael Arrington (Jefferson, South Carolina)
*Niki Credit (Fort Mill)
*Mason Diaz (Summerville)
*Devon DiFederico (Tampa, Florida)
*Kaila Dockal (York)
*Dashae Middleton (Beaufort)
*Bridget O’Connor (Quincy, Massachusetts)
*Kristin Ramirez (Waxhaw, North Carolina)
*Kristin Ward (Myrtle Beach)

Show times are 7 p.m. April 17-18 and 3 p.m. April 19. Tickets are $5 with a Winthrop ID or $10 for the public.
