Winthrop Alumna Will Represent Education Superintendent on Board of Trustees

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Julie Gore Fowler ’85, ’88 was recently appointed to the Winthrop University Board of Trustees to represent S.C. Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman.

Fowler, a resident of Piedmont, South Carolina, is a deputy state superintendent at the S.C. State Department of Education. She graduated from Winthrop with a Bachelor of Science in special and elementary education, followed by a Master of Education. She went on to receive principal and superintendent certification and a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Clemson University.

Among Fowler’s first actions as a Winthrop board member was to take part March 13 in the selection of Dan Mahony as the university’s 11th president.

“I am thrilled to be giving back to Winthrop by serving in this capacity. Winthrop equipped me with the foundation I needed to start my career in education, and I will forever be grateful,” Fowler said.

She has experience as a classroom teacher at the elementary, middle and high school level, and has served as an adjunct faculty member at Clemson University. She has a variety of administrative experience having worked as a principal, academic specialist, director of admissions, director of special education, director of student and support services, director of curriculum and instruction, and as an assistant superintendent.

A past president of the Instructional Leaders Division of the S.C. Association of School Administrators, Fowler was chosen as the 2014 State District Administrator of the Year.

She has volunteered on numerous boards in her community and across the state. Married to James Robert “Jimmy” Fowler Jr., Fowler and her husband have two adult children, James Robert “Trey” Fowler III and Sidney Ann Fowler.
