Science Educators Will Be on Campus This Weekend Discussing Teaching Strategies

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Nearly 40 science educators interested in effective teaching and learning will attend a Feb. 21 workshop at Winthrop University.

The sessions are supported by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) and are part of a five-year initiative funded by a National Science Foundation Research Coordination Network Undergraduate Biology Education. The overall goal of this project is to create and disseminate validated assessment tools for the foundational core knowledge and skills required for biochemistry and molecular biology degrees, and to promote validated student-centered teaching approaches.

Called “Connecting Core Concepts and Best Teaching Practices in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology,” the workshop will help attendees develop new assessment tools for core concepts in biochemistry and molecular biology. Participants will also discuss effective teaching strategies and showcase best practices in a collaborative setting.

Presenters are Ellis Bell of the University of Richmond, Malcolm Campbell of Davidson College and Cheryl Bailey of Mount Mary University.

Attending will be faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students interested in undergraduate science education from Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Winthrop faculty organizers are Heather Evans-Anderson of the Department of Biology and Jason C. Hurlbert of the Department of Chemistry, Physics and Geology.
