ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University will be well represented at this spring’s ArtFields, a nine-day juried Southeastern arts festival in Lake City, South Carolina.

Nearly 20 Winthrop alumni, students, faculty and administrators – including President Emeritus Tony DiGiorgio – had works chosen for inclusion from among 1,000-plus entries for the arts festival that will run April 24 through May 2.

Founded and initially funded in 2013 by businesswoman, philanthropist and South Carolina native Darla Moore, ArtFields is an intentional takeover of Lake City's downtown that places artworks in venues ranging from restaurants to antique shops. The idea is literally to transform the city into one big art venue, attracting out-of-town visitors and spurring economic growth through arts tourism. To help the program earn credibility in the art world quickly, ArtFields confers $100,000 in prizes, both in juried and people's choice awards. One must be an artist from one of the 12 Southeastern states to enter the competition and only one work per artist may be submitted.

The economic impact of the 2014 festival was estimated at $5.4 million, officials there have told various media, with more than 22,000 visitors coming to Lake City to participate.
