Campus Welcomes Runners and Potential Students on Feb. 28

Quick Facts

The run will begin at 8 a.m. on the front steps of campus on Feb. 28.
Registration rates are $40 between now and Feb. 27 and $45 on race day.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA — Four miles, 12 doughnuts and one hour, all for a good cause.

That’s your mission, should you choose to accept it, at the inaugural Krispy Kreme Race-Run for Reading on Feb. 28 at Winthrop University. The race will benefit the Early Learning Partnership of York County, a nonprofit organization that develops and promotes programs supporting the health and academic readiness of children five years old and younger in the local community.

The run will begin at 8 a.m. on the front of campus and consist of a four-mile loop beginning at Winthrop with brief stops at the new Fountain Park in downtown Rock Hill. At that stop, participants will be challenged to down a dozen doughnuts as quickly as possible before racing for the finish line. The journey will take participants along the front of campus, down Oakland Avenue, through Main Street and back.

For those who don’t want the sugar high, they can still join in on a casual four-mile run. Families and children are welcome as well for a 1-mile campus “fun walk” and a Kidz Fun Zone featuring free activities.

Teresa Creech
, executive director for the Early Learning Partnership, said she heard about a Krispy Kreme challenge race at a state institution in North Carolina. When she heard that the nationally known chain was opening a location in Rock Hill, she thought a similar event at Winthrop was a wonderful idea.

“What could be better for York County than its citizens agreeing to take on the challenge of the Krispy Kreme race as well as addressing the challenge to educate and develop our youngest citizens into lifelong learners?” she said. “Kids are such a great cause! Getting books into the hands of children and their families is one of the easiest ways to promote literacy.”

Race registration is open and volunteers are needed. Winthrop students received a code by email to register at a discounted cost. Regular registration rates are $40 between Feb. 1-27; and $45 on race day. Prices differ depending on which challenge you accept. Registration includes a T-shirt.

For more information on registering and volunteering, visit the race website or call the partnership at 803/323-2180.

Winthrop Preview Day Also Scheduled for Race Day

In addition to hosting runners, volunteers and families for race day, Winthrop also will welcome prospective students and their families to campus for Preview Day.

Preview Day provides an in-depth view of academic and campus life at Winthrop. Faculty, staff and students are available from the university’s academic and student life areas to provide prospective students with more information about Winthrop and to answer questions. The 10 a.m.-2 p.m. schedule also includes a student-guided tour of the campus and a tour of a sample residence hall room and concludes with a tour of the future student’s academic department.

Past Preview Days have received excellent reviews from incoming students and their families. Here are a few recent praises from attendees:

• “As an intended biology major, I really enjoyed how we were allowed to go into the labs and speak to professors. No other college that I have toured has done this, so I will definitely remember that when deciding which one to go to!”
• “This tour totally made me fall in love with Winthrop. I wasn’t expecting to love the campus, people and everything else about Winthrop as much as I did. Winthrop is now my number-one choice college.”
• “The professors were so enthusiastic about future students.”

It will be an exciting, fun-filled and informative Saturday on Feb. 28. Make plans to be a part of this special day!
