ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA -- A talented musical group that has spent decades honing its craft will grace the stage of Byrnes Auditorium at Winthrop University.

The internationally revered NEXUS will perform Thursday, Jan. 22, at 7:30 p.m. They will host a free workshop at 11 a.m. Jan. 23 in 120 Barnes Hall. The show is part of the Friends of the Conservatory series.

For more than 30 years, the four members of NEXUS have gained a reputation for not only their creativity and innovation, but also for their ability to create music from just about everything: Swiss cowbells, Middle Eastern hand drums, Tibetan prayer bowls and more. These master percussionists fashion a unique sound of their own.

NEXUS also doesn't limit itself to one genre of music. Performances cover everything from military music and 1920s rag time to groundbreaking compositions from Toro Takemitsu and John Cage.

NEXUS first performed together in 1971 in a completely improvised show. Since then, they've performed across the globe, including international music festivals in Holland, Singapore and Tokyo. Members include Bob Becker, Bill Cahn, Russell Hartenberger and Garry Kvistad.

Tickets are $5 for students with a Winthrop ID, $10 for seniors and Winthrop faculty/staff and $15 general admission. It is a cultural event and Global Learning Initiative event.

To reserve tickets, call 803/323-2255 or e-mail music@winthrop.edu.
