ROCK HILL, S.C. - Betty Whalen, Winthrop University’s director of financial aid, will receive the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators’ Leadership Award for the southern region next year.

The award will be formally presented at the region’s annual conference Feb. 8-11 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The region is made up of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

The NASFAA State and Regional Leadership Award is presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the financial aid profession at the regional and state levels over at least seven years. The individuals selected for the award must have exhibited high integrity and character, shown creative leadership, inspired others to participate in professional development activities, held elected office in the professional organizations and supported the goals of the national association.

Regional financial aid directors said Whalen’s focus has always been in helping others in the profession do their jobs to the best of their ability, as well as advancing the goals of the association. Whalen often helped train new aid administrators at the Southern Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators’ annual week-long workshops. Over the years Whalen has served as an instructor, curriculum coordinator and director for several of the workshops.

“She has been gracious with her time and her expertise – serving as a role model to many. Betty was always there to fill a crucial role when needed,” said Lisanne Masterson, SASFAA president and director of financial aid at Brevard College. “This recognition is truly representative of her tireless efforts over the years and the impact she has had within our region. We are honored and blessed to have Betty as a colleague within our financial aid community.”

Whalen came to Winthrop in 1998 and has been a financial aid administrator nearly 30 years. She has served on the financial aid administrator's regional board as vice president in 1996-97 and on the executive board for four years, including in 2007-08. She served as president of the South Carolina association in 2004-05 and the North Carolina association in 1991-92.
