ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University’s Staff Assembly collected 1,200 pounds of food this month from university faculty and staff members to donate to Project HOPE.

The Campus and Community Involvement Committee of the Staff Assembly organized the drive and delivered the non-perishable food on Dec. 15 to the nearby emergency assistance agency. More food is anticipated to be donated and collected in January to assist Rock Hill’s working and unemployed poor.

Winthrop employees also donated $150 to the local food pantry.

This is the first year for the Staff Assembly and the food donation project is one of its most successful initiatives so far, said Chair Margaret Williamson, assistant dean of University College.

“We are pleased with the response to this drive from the Winthrop community,” she said. “The Staff Assembly looks forward to initiating future efforts to enhance the campus and Rock Hill community.”

Winthrop’s Academic Affairs and President’s offices also donated pet food for the fifth year to the York County Council on Aging to be handed out through the Meals on Wheels program.
